Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax imposed on the supply of goods and services in India. It is a comprehensive, multi-stage, destination-based tax that replaces multiple taxes levied by the central and state governments.
GST Rates in India
India follows a multiple tax rate structure under GST:
- 5% GST: Essential commodities like packaged food items, footwear below ₹1000, etc.
- 12% GST: Items like processed food, business class air tickets, etc.
- 18% GST: Most items like cosmetics, refrigerators, washing machines, etc.
- 28% GST: Luxury items and sin goods like automobiles, cigarettes, etc.
CGST and SGST
For intra-state supplies, GST is divided equally between:
- CGST (Central GST): Collected by the Central Government
- SGST (State GST): Collected by the State Government
For example, if the GST rate is 18%, it will be divided as 9% CGST and 9% SGST.
